Modernised S-Bahn trains for a growing city

Munich's metropolitan area is growing continuously, and demand for suburban rail services is growing with it. We want to meet the future demands of our passengers, so we are overhauling the city's S-Bahn trains and planning to start replacing them with new vehicles as of the mid-2020s.

New seats

The modernised S-Bahn has much wider passageways to the seating area, and its interior is more open. It feels more spacious as a result, and storing luggage is also easier.

New luggage racks

In addition to the storage spaces beside and under the seats, we have also added new racks over the grouped seats and in the interconnecting gangways. They are made of transparent glass: nothing can fall through them, and you have a clear view of your luggage at all times.

Monitors

Large monitors display real-time information to keep you up to date about the route, connecting trains, disruptions and timetable changes. This enables you to respond flexibly if you need to change your travel plans.

Clearly separated functional areas

The adjoining multi-purpose area has been modified to meet the conflicting needs of different users: cyclists, wheelchair users, people with pushchairs, etc. The family and group area is even spacious enough to accommodate large numbers of people.

Improved safety

The transparent interior offers clear sightlines while also featuring a new lighting system and more handles and grips. Together, these add up to greater passenger safety. Anyone standing or moving can balance themselves better thanks to grab handles near the doors and larger grips on seats. The open, uncluttered interiors maximise visibility – combined with modern LED lighting, this enhances passengers' sense of safety.
