Rethinking trains
Full flexibility for a unique customer experience in the metropolitan transport of the future
In the next 10 to 20 years, we expect more than one billion additional customers per year in nationwide metropolitan transport. In order to create more capacity in our trains and at the same time offer a unique customer experience, we have developed the IdeasTrainCity with a fully functional 1:1-model as a prototype for the S-Bahn and regional transport of the future in large metropolitan areas. Additional capacities are realised through the flexibilisation of standing and seating areas. A new intuitive passenger information and passenger guidance system ensures good orientation on and in the train. A high-quality product design and innovative ambient lighting create a new feel-good atmosphere.
A unique interior concept for the trains of the future
The new passenger compartment features a flexible standing and seating layout as well as an intelligent system for informing and guiding passengers. In this way, the train adapts to the passenger volume and the wishes of the passengers at all times.

City Service
It offers lots of space and uses overdoor displays to guide passengers so they can enter and exit the train quickly. In addition to a vending machine for drinks, the innovative service wall offers passengers an e-scooter charging station and a large display with a digital map of the network of routes. One eye-catching feature is the lighting system, which adjusts the light conditions to suit the time of day with settings for peak- and off-time services. It is linked with anonymised video sensors. In the future, we will be able to use it to guide passengers to available seating and standing room. It also helps us create a pleasant ambiance for them: cool lighting in the morning and warm lighting in the evening.
City Flex
The displays integrated into the windows and the screens suspended from the ceiling will keep you up to speed, telling you about upcoming stops, connecting services and any disruptions. All of this information is visible at a glance. The automatic seats are another highlight: with the touch of a button, they can be converted into seating suited to groups of four, or they can be turned into a three-person group for creating more capacity on board trains. This will improve the flow of passengers and shave valuable seconds off the time spent at stops to enable more punctual rail operations.
City Multi-purpose
Sometimes you might only want to travel one stop and don't feel like sitting down. No worries: the IdeasTrainCity's multi-purpose compartment has vertical seats for you to use. An innovative plug & play system allows for easy replacement of the seats to meet the seasonal requirements of the train. Additional seats are located opposite, and a time-controlled magnetic system can be used to convert them into convenient and comfortable supports during rush hour. These solutions enable us to increase the capacity of our vehicles without compromising on our passengers' comfort.
Interconnecting gangway
We make optimum use of all available space. The usual interconnecting gangways you know from today's trains are no place to linger, but we have revamped them in the IdeasTrainCity: now they are wider with built-in rests and ambient lighting, making them pleasant areas for passengers to stand.
City Privacy und City Working
Was your meeting postponed? Now you can join video conferences from onboard the train. Two partitioned areas provide space and privacy for flexible work while on the move. Vertical seats to lean against, integrated displays and a folding table offer many possibilities for functional work. If the seats are occupied, you can switch to the opposite side. You will find a work desk there where you can make yourself comfortable. It's up to you whether to stand up or sit down on the fold-out seats. An LED display on the window provides you with up-to-date information.
City Standing und Multi Flex
Comfortable vertical seats accommodate a large number of passengers in a small space. It is easy to push the seats to the side with a handle, creating more standing or bicycle room during rush hour. At the push of a button, these can be positioned to face each other for social travelling, but when demand for space increases during peak times, they can be lined up against the windows. This feature is rounded out by the window displays showing passenger information and smart windows with digital dimming.
Community Entrance
In this entrance, the columns flanking the doors are fitted with padding for standing passengers, and these features also fold down as seating in off-peak periods. On S-Bahn lines that travel for longer and require only every other door area, the inside space can be blocked off with additional bench seats, freeing up additional seating. An extra folding seat can be added on the other side – another comfort-enhancing option for people who will remain on board for longer. Anyone who needs help can use the train's video intercom system, which puts them in touch with one of our employees.
Universal train! The revolutionary passenger area with greater capacity
The big highlight! A one-of-a-kind flexible room layout adapts to the needs of passengers. Seats can be repositioned at the touch of a button to create a space laid out for people standing and featuring convenient rests for them. This enables us to create space for commuters or for people going to major events, while offering numerous seating options in off-peak periods. Lines of screens and a full-pane window display combined with an LED ceiling matrix provide a new form of infotainment. The displays can be used to create the right atmosphere for events.
Virtual Entrance
Travellers are greeted here by our visionary air filter and a cosy seating lounge. Passengers can admire an extraordinary interplay of nature and technology. Inside the illuminated Plexiglas body, real-life algae grow on panels and continuously purify the air. An optical light system displays an image of the sun as it currently appears. Passengers can also kick back on the lounge benches to enjoy their journey. Those benches appeal to group travellers in particular; they can spend their journey together, turning the City Lounge into a hot spot for communication.
